Maintaining Your Tyres for Safety and Economy

When you keep your tyres inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s suggestions, your vehicle performance includes optimum grip and handling and reduced fuel consumption. With regular checks of your tyres, you will be on the road much longer and save on unnecessary expenses.

Checking Your Tyre Pressure and Condition

Your vehicle should have a placard fixed to the front door aperture or another part of the vehicle that is easily accessed. The placard will have the manufacturer’s requirements for Wheel and tyre combinations, load capacity, air pressure and speed rating.

By law, no tyre should be on the road with less than a 1.5mm tread depth. When your vehicle reaches 1.5mm it is time to replace the tyres.

Air pressure should be checked no less than once a month, preferably each time you fill your tank, especially when travelling a distance. Depending on driving conditions and your load, tyre pressure may need to vary, but typically, keep them inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Ensure that your caps are fitted to tyre valves, eliminating the risk of dust entering the tyres, as well as air to escape.

Check for, and remove any stones in the treads (this should be done once a month).

Check for cuts or bulges and other irregularities. If any are found have the dealer check for internal damage.

Each year, have your wheels balanced and / or wheel alignment.

Check with your manufacturer’s requirements on wheel rotations.

Try not to keep your foot on the brake!

Do not impact the tyres on kerbs when parking.

Always ensure your spare is inflated to the recommended air pressure and in good condition.
